McLaren entered Formula 1 in 1966, founded by New Zealander Bruce McLaren, who had already made his name as a driver and engineer. The team took its first Grand Prix win at Spa in 1968, but Bruce McLaren was killed in a testing accident in 1970. Under Teddy Mayer, McLaren became a title-winning team in the 1970s, with Emerson Fittipaldi winning the Drivers’ Championship in 1974 and James Hunt doing the same in 1976.
