Alpine was founded in 1955 by Jean Rédélé, a French rally driver and Renault dealer, and became closely associated with lightweight sports cars such as the A110. The brand’s strongest early competition identity came in rallying, where Alpine was a leading force in the early 1970s and won the inaugural World Rally Championship for manufacturers in 1973. Renault bought Alpine that same year, and the name also became linked with endurance racing, including Renault-Alpine’s 1978 Le Mans victory and Alpine’s later return to prototypes, now represented by the A424 Hypercar in the World Endurance Championship.
