Christodoulou takes pole at VLN season finale
Mon 04, Nov, 2019

Christodoulou returned to a very autumnal Nurburgring for the finale of the VLN Championship last weekend.

Adam Christodoulou joined Team Black Falcon regulars, Hubert Haupt (GER) and Dirk Muller (GER) in the number 16 Mercedes AMG GT3 for the four hour race.

Damp conditions on Saturday morning for qualifying and Team Black Falcon opted for slick tyres and Christodoulou behind the wheel for the end of qualifying. Christodoulou used his wealth of experience of the circuit smashing all other qualifying times by over a second to put the AMG GT3 on Pole.

Christodoulou said, “The car felt so good, the team had done an amazing job, it was a great feeling to put the car on pole for the last race here this season.”

Later in the day, the sun shone on the Nurburgring for a bright and dry start to the race. Christodoulou lined up in pole position behind the safety car for the formation lap. As the pack weaved behind the safety car fallen leaves where lifted off the track and began to collect in the pole sitters grille.

Christodoulou said “Some people say anything can happen at the Nurburgring, but collecting leaves in the grille was something none of us anticipated! It’s certainly the first time I’ve ever seen this happen.”

After making a strong start on the grand prix loop it soon became clear something wasn’t right as the number 16 AMG began to over heat, forcing an unscheduled pit stop on the first lap to clear the leaves from the grille, dropping them back 107 place and losing 3 minutes at the end of lap one. Determined to fight back, Christodoulou battled through the pack during a tough double stint bringing the car back up to tenth over all and setting the fastest lap of the race so far, before handing over to team mate Hubert Haupt. Strong stints from Haupt and the Muller respectively and clean pit stops from the team and Muller brought the car across the line in sixth just 2.2 minutes behind the leaders.

Christodoulou said, “It was a real shame we couldn’t turn our pole position in to a win this weekend but Hubert, Dirk and the whole team did a great job and we made a great comeback to sixth place. The car felt fantastic. Congrats to our Black Falcon team mates Maro and Patrick, it was great to see them take the win for the team.”

“Next year we will return to the ring with a new car and I just can’t wait to get back out there.”
