SV Racing hopes to carry winning momentum north of the border to Knockhill
Thu 21, Aug, 2014

SV Racing hopes to soar as it hits the high kerbs and deep undulations of Scotland’s Knockhill circuit with an unprecedented seven-driver line-up in the 2014 Michelin Ginetta GT4 Supercup and Courier Connections Renault UK Clio Cup (23-24 August).

The Wettenhall, Cheshire-based team made an instant splash in only its first season in the hotly-contested Ginetta GT4 Supercup, and the championship title remains a very realistic prospect for Letchworth Garden City racer, David Pittard, in the concluding half of a season that has so far exceeded all expectations.

Pittard, a member of the KX Akademy scholarship programme, heads north of the border to Scotland’s scenic Knockhill circuit for the first time, but will be joined in the SV Racing stable by Edinburgh’s Rory Bryant – a double Scottish Ford Fiesta ST Champion – whose fluency at the Fife track will be a major asset.

It is hoped that Pittard will be able to utilise Bryant’s superior local knowledge and experience of Knockhill to bolster his own charge and at the very least depose Andrew Watson for third place in the title race.

“It’s going to be nice to have Rory aboard and, as a Scottish Ginetta Champion, I honestly can’t think of any better teammate to have,” said Pittard. “We will be able to learn from each other – I’ll get him acquainted with the car and he can teach me the circuit – and we’ll both be gathering data to ensure we have as strong a weekend as possible. I’ve never raced at Knockhill before and it looks like a real rollercoaster that encompasses a lot of committed corners. It’s a short circuit, so I’ll have time to get in a lot of laps and get in the groove, although I don’t know what to relate it to, as it’s quite unique.

“As always, my aim is to qualify well, conserve my tyres and hopefully be in the reversed grid mix. The approach has worked well at every circuit we’ve visited so far this year and expectations have been exceeded to such an extent that, if we don’t achieve our goals, we’re very disappointed. I know Andrew Watson is fast at Knockhill, having achieved pole position there last year, but I’d like to at least jump back past him for third position in the standings. I think that’s a feasible aim.”

For Bryant – backed by e-cigarette brand, Vaporized – the primary objective will be to acclimatise to his new surroundings, although the Scot believes that merging his circuit knowledge with Pittard’s experience of racing the Ginetta G55 will make SV Racing a formidable force in Fife.

“I’m genuinely excited and the nerves are building too, as it’s all starting to feel very real,” said Bryant. “So much work has gone in to making this happen and I’m now just looking forward to getting in the car and doing the driving part. I would be easy to put myself under too much pressure, but it’s important to remember that I’m entering a really competitive field and the races are going to be tough.

“I just want to do a good job for my sponsor, Vaporized, and SV Racing, pulling together three strong finishes by making use of David’s and my engineers’ knowledge of the car and supporting the team with my track experience. Of course, I always want to win and I’ll stick my neck on the line by saying that a podium finish would be fantastic. I see this as a springboard for opportunities in 2015 and beyond.”

The Danny Buxton-led team continues to reign supreme in the UK Clio Cup – Britain’s premier one-make saloon car championship – as it holds a dominant lead in the Teams’ Championship with Josh Cook standing atop the Drivers’ table, Ant Whorton-Eales fourth, Alex Morgan sixth and Ash Hand tenth.

Cook, from Bristol, is full of confidence after ‘doing the double’ last time out at Snetterton, and refuses to allow a lack of experience on Fife’s Knockhill circuit to prevent him from extending an already impressive tally of race wins and podium finishes.

“I’m in the best position and the best frame of mine possible after achieving so much at Snetterton, but I’m going up against the likes of Mike Bushell and James Colburn who both have experience of Knockhill and I realise I’m the underdog this time around,” said Cook. “Ultimately, that’s where I stand and, while I will have an opportunity to learn where the track goes before the weekend, it won’t put me on par with them. I don’t have any specific expectations and I’ll just push as hard as I always do to ensure get some good results and defend my championship position.”

However, joining the SV Racing UK Clio Cup fold is Scotland's Jamie Clarke, who is confident of a strong showing at Knockhill, saying: “I’m looking forward to racing at Knockhill again and being back with Danny (Buxton) and the SV Racing guys. My family has kindly agreed to cut short our holiday to make this happen, so I’m hoping it’ll go well! I don’t have the time to race too often due to business, but I am trying to have one or two outings a year just to keep my hand in.

“I’ll turn up with my crash helmet and just go into the two test sessions on the Friday not expecting too much – I’m conscious the other guys have had half a season in the car. It’ll be starting from scratch again really so we’ll just play it by ear and see how we get on.”

Saturday (23 August) kicks off with Courier Connections Renault UK Clio Cup qualifying at 9.00, with race one scheduled for 15.50 later that same day and the second encounter the following afternoon at 12.30 (Sunday 24 August).

Michelin Ginetta GT4 Supercup qualifying will begin at 11.40, with race one at 16.30 and the final two races of the weekend on Sunday (24 August) at 9.00 and 15.00.
