Robertson relishing home return to Knockhill
Fri 15, Aug, 2014

Charlie Robertson aims to fly the Saltire with pride on his return to Knockhill Circuit in Fife next weekend, 23rd/24th August, when the Scottish teenager sets about further extending his impressive lead at the top of the Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup standings.

Having last raced north of the border in 2012, when he claimed a memorable double race victory at the 1.3-mile track on his way to winning that year’s Ginetta Junior Championship title, the 17-year-old can’t wait to once again compete in front of his home supporters just over a week from now.

Ahead of the next three rounds of the Ginetta GT4 season, former Aberfoyle schoolboy Charlie has a more than comfortable 46 point advantage in the title battle with a superb tally of 10 podiums, including six race victories.

Off the back of a terrific double win a fortnight ago at Snetterton in Norfolk, the HHC Motorsport driver heads back to his home nation on a real high and determined to again master the undulating challenge that is Knockhill at the wheel of his Investigo and Blackstar-backed Ginetta G55.

“I’m really looking forward to going back to Knockhill, it’s a fantastic track and it’s going to be great racing in front of family and friends again back home in Scotland”, said Charlie, “I did miss racing there last year when I was in BRDC Formula 4, it’s actually one of the race meetings I’ve been most excited about so hopefully we can have a good weekend there.

“Snetterton was fantastic, the HHC guys did a terrific job with my car and to come away with an increased lead in the championship was just what we all wanted. The aim is go out there and win again at Knockhill, but consistency is the most important thing to try and keep our advantage.”

Next weekend’s seventh event of the Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup season could well turn out to be one of the most crucial of the year for Charlie, especially as it’s one of only two triple-header meetings remaining – the other two events being double-header contests. There is still a long way to go in the title battle, however, with a total of 10 races still left.

Notably, this year marks the 40th anniversary of motorsport at Knockhill and so the visit of the British Touring Car Championship package next weekend is an incredibly important event for Scottish racing as a whole. As well as featuring special displays showcasing four decades of action at the Fife track, there will also be a celebration of Jim Clark’s historic BTCC title victory 50 years ago.

“There’s going to be a really great atmosphere next weekend”, said Charlie, “It’s a massive event for Knockhill and it’s a real privilege to be racing there in the 40th anniversary year. Hopefully I can stand on the top step of the podium and make it a home win in the GT4 SuperCup!”

Charlie’s first track action at Knockhill will come next Friday, 22nd August, during two officially timed test sessions. Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup qualifying will take place at 11.40 on Saturday, 23rd August, with round 18 getting underway at 16.30. On Sunday, 24th August, round 19 will commence at 09.00 with round 20 – which will be screened live on ITV4 and ITV4 HD – beginning at 15.00.
