Massot hungry for hat-trick of wins at Thruxton
Thu 01, May, 2014

Race-winning Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup driver Pepe Massot is determined to string together his most consistent showing of 2014 so far when the championship visits Thruxton this weekend, 3rd/4th May – the Spaniard setting his sights high as he bids for a hat-trick of victories.

With one win and a second place from the opening two race meetings, the 18-year-old from Barcelona has already proven his pace but more than his share of misfortune at Brands Hatch and Donington Park has hampered the early part of his title challenge.

Convinced Thruxton can be the turning point of his championship campaign, Massot will go into rounds seven, eight and nine off the back of an impressive performance in officially timed testing at the 2.35-mile track a few weeks ago where he posted the second quickest time of the day.

More notable than his position on the timesheets, though, was the fact the JHR Developments driver was able to deliver such excellent pace despite a series of issues during the two sessions – not least being baulked on his best lap and running a heavier car than his rivals with an increased fuel load to try and off-set problems with fuel surge.

“My aim for Thruxton is to be on pole and win all three races”, said Massot, “The season has not gone the way it should have from the beginning really. Donington was a bit better than Brands Hatch was but we should have had pole position, it was mine but the red flags came out only a few seconds before I completed my lap.

“If I’d started on pole, I know I could have won race one and also race two. At least we took one win from the weekend, but we’re aiming for more – I’m hungry for much more than that. The results we work so hard for have not come yet, but I’m confident Thruxton can be a turning point for us.”

Although disappointed with the first two events of the season, the naturally talented teenager is still sixth in the championship and just 31 points shy of the coveted top three. With more than 100 points up for grabs to any one driver across the weekend’s trio of races, though, Massot can make some serious headway in the title battle if all goes to plan.

With no pre-event testing prior to this weekend’s action at Thruxton, the Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup competitors will head straight into qualifying at 09.30 on Saturday, 3rd May, with round seven getting underway at 15.20 and round eight following at 17.45.

On Sunday, 4th May, round nine – which will be screened live in the UK on ITV4 and ITV4 HD and also streamed online at the www.itv.com/btcc website – will begin at approximately 13.20.
