Kaan Önder takes points from challenging Oschersleben weekend
Sun 13, Sep, 2015

Kaan Önder took another nine points from the Oschersleben’s first Audi Sport TT Cup race yesterday but was denied a further boost to his tally by a mechanical issue in race two.

After finishing ninth fastest in the practice session, the 18 year old from Istanbul had mixed qualifying results, setting times that gave him 15th and 8th places on the grid for the two race starts.

Saturday’s race one saw Kaan avoid the chaos that ensued at the difficult first corner before moving through the field to gain places and finish 11th. In race two, Kaan continued to have a strong pace, starting well and making an outstanding overtaking manoeuvre on Josh Caygill before retiring after six laps with a gearbox issue.

Kaan’s next races are at the Nürburgring track on 26th and 27th September.

“Race one was difficult as I was starting from the second half of the grid so surviving the first corner chaos was the first job. There was crazy stuff going on but I kept it together and gained positions. Then the first few laps today were going well. My pace was great on new tyres – I’m sure I could have done well from where I was. It’s a shame really. Overall the pace throughout the weekend has been good. Looking at the data, if I had put together consistent optimal laps and used the push-to-pass well I could have been in the top five. I’m still improving, especially with optimising tyre grip, and it’s a shame that I couldn’t take the points to show it. I only have two weeks to try again at the next round.”
