Victory, lap record and retirement for Krohn in New York

Anders Krohn looked set to have his best race-event to date when he was leading round 6 of the US Formula 2000 Championship at Watkins Glen International, but two bolts coming loose in the rear suspension of his Van Diemen race car ended his hopes of a double win at the legendary track in New York. He won Saturday’s Qualifying and Round 5 of the championship in convincing style, and kept the same form when he sat on Pole Position for Round 6 having broken the Formula 2000 lap record. “The race-weekend has gone pretty much to perfection, except for the bad luck we had in the second race. We have shown that we are the quickest on track, but all the race pace in the world wouldn’t have won us this race though.” Said Anders, reflecti ng on his third weekend of racing in the U.S.

Qualifying for Race 1 went very well and Anders was able to do what his crew and himself had hoped for; set one quick lap and then come in and save the tires for the race. On lap four he set a time that would secure him pole position for the race, a good 4-tenths of a second clear of the field.

As Race 1 got started, Krohn immidiately captured the lead and got a good gap before the safety car was put on track following a crash in one of the faster parts of the track. When the safety car pulled in, only 6 laps remained, but Anders still managed to pull out a gap of 4,5 second to dominate the first race of the weekend. “We had a great pace all day, and I am so happy to get away with maximum points for pole position, race win and fastest race lap. Now we have got our work cut out for tomorrow though, and it’s gonna be exciting to see if we can carry on in the same fashion.” Commented Anders, shortly after capturing his fourth win of the season.

In the Qualifying for Race 2, the Andersen Racing crew and Anders Krohn put together an unbeatable package, as they went on break the lap record with a staggering time of 1 minute 53,874 seconds. With the field over six tenths behind, it looked as if the #9 Van Diemen sponsored by Trallfa, Colosseum and Kruse Smith was going to be hard to beat around the 3,4 mile Grand Prix course.

Anders started Race 2 the way he left it after qualifying, and lead by a massive 3,6 seconds with only four laps completed. On lap four the safety car came on track due to crashes on different points of the track, and Krohn’s lead was erased. During the caution period, Anders became aware of a handling issue with the car, but it wasn’t until he got up to speed after the green was dropped that he realized something was terribly wrong. He dropped several positions every lap, and soon retired from the race, pulling into the pits. After the Andersen Racing crew examined the car, it became apparent that two bolts in the left rear suspension unit had come loose, thereby making the car almost impossible to drive. “I tried to hang on for as long as I could, but when I almost crashed on a straight doing over 130 miles an hour, it was time to stop. I am glad my crew called me into the pits when they did. Today just wasn’t meant to be our day.” A clearly dissapointed Krohn stated.

Krohn still holds a massive lead in the Championship battle, and has so far won four out of six races. Rounds 7&8 of the US Formula 2000 Championship will be held at the technical Mid Ohio race track, on July 12-13. And altough he didn’t end the Watkins Glen weekend the way he would have wanted to, he still feels happy about his season so far. “We have been on the pace every single race weekend, and have won the majority of the races so far. The important thing now is to focus on the next event and try to bring that momentum through the whole season. Once again, I would like to thank my fantastic crew Andersen Racing for once again giving me a winning car, and naturally Trallfa Industries, Colosseum Dental and Kruse Smith for the ir continued support and faith in me.” Ended an optimistic Anders Krohn, looking forward to Mid Ohio.

Driver Database is huge
December 2 2008
I started this site in 2004 with about 100 pages related to the Formula 1 drivers of the 2004 season. Now, more than four years later it has grown a bit. How big is it, you ask? Total number of pages: 210744 (at Dec 01) Size of text in database: 47.5 MB While 47.5 MB might not sound like much...
