Turvey takes pole as Carlin qualify 1-2-3 in Bucharest

Oliver Turvey took his fourth pole position of the season this morning, with a stunning lap around the streets of Bucharest in Romania. Taking part in qualifying for round 20 of the 2008 British F3 International Series, Turvey was just three thousands of a second quicker than team mate and Red Bull driver Brendon Hartley. Jaime Alguersuari again qualified in third place, while contact with the wall cut short Sam Abay’s qualifying session, meaning the Australian will start from ninth.

Having dominated proceedings in yesterday’s qualifying session, Hartley was looking strong for his sixth pole of the 2008 season as the teams took to the track for this morning’s qualifying. It was Sam Abay who was the quickest Carlin driver in the early stages though, the F3 rookie in provisional pole position with ten minutes of the session gone. As the session entered the half way point, however, the times start to tumble, with Turvey quickest, Hartley second, Abay fourth and Alguersuari fifth.

Displaying the pace that won him yesterday’s race, Hartley became the first driver to dip into the 1 minute 12s with 12 minutes to go, only for team mate Turvey to immediately follow suit and snatch provisional pole. The next few laps saw the Carlin duo trade places at the top of the time sheets, with Alguersuari setting the third quickest time with five minutes to go. Pushing hard to better his fifth place qualifying position yesterday, Abay hit the wall, bringing his qualifying session to an early conclusion. As the tension mounted in the final minutes, the session was red flagged after an accident involving Steven Guerrero. As the cars returned to the pits, it was Hartley who had got the most from his Mercedes powered Carlin Dallara, with Turvey second and Alguersuari third.

With Guerrero’s car cleared from the circuit, the F3 drivers returned to the track. In the dying seconds of the session, Turvey went even quicker, to snatch pole position with a lap just 0.003 seconds quicker than Hartley, providing the eighth all-Carlin front row of the season. Alguersuari keeps his championship hopes alive by qualifying third.

Pole sitter Oliver Turvey said, “We found a little more time this morning, and I thought before the session we had the pace to get pole. I thought I could have got pole before the red flag came out, so I knew I had to really push in the final few laps when the session restarted. My engineer and I made a small adjustment over night which has really improved the car. I’m just aiming to get a good start and win the race this afternoon. I’m not thinking any further ahead than that at the moment.”

Team Principal Trevor Carlin added, “It was a very exciting qualifying session, the red flag made it a four minute dash for pole and all the drivers coped with the pressure well. In the end, Oliver put together a stunning lap; it was just perfect, although Brendon is still extremely close. I’m confident that we can win again this afternoon, which would obviously strengthen our chances in the championship.”

Driver Database is huge
December 2 2008
I started this site in 2004 with about 100 pages related to the Formula 1 drivers of the 2004 season. Now, more than four years later it has grown a bit. How big is it, you ask? Total number of pages: 210744 (at Dec 01) Size of text in database: 47.5 MB While 47.5 MB might not sound like much...
