Tim Slade aims to extend championship lead

Dexion Racing’s Tim Slade will be out to use his championship momentum to carry him towards an extended points lead at this weekend’s penultimate round of the Australian Formula Ford Championship, to be held at Symmons Plains raceway in Tasmania.

The 20-year old Victorian based South Australian heads to the circuit - just outside of Launceston - leading the championship by just four points, but enters the round coming off the back of a dominating performance at Mallala Raceway two months ago that vaulted him into the points lead.

Slade won the pole and two races at Mallala, driving his Sonic Motor Racing prepared, Dexion Racing Van Diemen to jump rival John Martin and snare the championship lead with two rounds to go this year.

“It’s all looking pretty good at the moment,” Admitted Slade today as he prepared to leave for Tasmania.

“I have spoken to a couple of people about how I should be approaching this round, given that I’m now in front of the championship and have to defend my lead instead of attacking others to try and get it.

“I have been thinking quite a lot about the last couple of rounds of the championship, but I’m not going to be thinking about it this weekend. It’s just another round for us so we’ll take it as It comes and see where things sit at the end of the weekend.

“I’m not thinking about the championship – I just want to go out and do the best job I can for myself and the team this weekend.” He said.

The Australian Formula Ford championship hasn’t visited the tricky Symmons Plains circuit for 11 years, with a majority of drivers entered in this weekend’s 15-car field never having visited the Tasmanian circuit, let alone competed at it.

Slade said that fact would only help to level the already close competition witnessed in this year’s championship.

“There has been a testing ban in place there all season to contain costs, so everyone will be going in there with a clean sheet,” he explained.

“It should make for a very close round. We’ve found this year that the field is at its closest when we are at the smaller circuits, like Barbagello (Where 14 cars were covered by a second in qualifying) so this weekend could be just as competitive.

“It’s a small circuit but it should be a very tough round.”

Dexion’s Tim Slade will be first in action this Friday for official practice, before qualifying and a race on Saturday, and two races Sunday to complete the round.

Tim Slade’s 2006 Formula Ford campaign can be followed on Dexion Racing’s extensive new Motorsport website, to be found online now at www.dexionracing.com.au.

Driver Database is huge
December 2 2008
I started this site in 2004 with about 100 pages related to the Formula 1 drivers of the 2004 season. Now, more than four years later it has grown a bit. How big is it, you ask? Total number of pages: 210744 (at Dec 01) Size of text in database: 47.5 MB While 47.5 MB might not sound like much...
