Samantha Reid back in the Formula Ford points

Samantha Reid has scored her first Australian Formula Ford Championship points since the season-opening Clipsal 500 Adelaide in March, at Oran Park raceway during the weekend.

The BMS Motorsport driver executed a weekend of consistent improvement at the demanding 2.7km South-Western Sydney circuit, rapidly finding time throughout the three-race format despite being one of the only competitors not to attend any pre-event testing at the track.

In her first full championship campaign in the series, Reid has been forced to learn new circuits and develop setups from scratch this year and has been on a rapid learning curve throughout the year.

After spending Friday’s two practice sessions learning the circuit, the 19-year-old completed a session-high 15 laps in qualifying and dramatically closed the margin to the leaders in the 20-minute session.

Reid enjoyed a race-long dice with Tony LeMessurier in the opening, 10-lap race held Saturday afternoon, the #42 car coming home in 12th place – some four places higher than her qualifying performance.

Race two – a longer, 12-lap affair held Sunday morning - was further proof of Reid’s rapid learning curve this season as the BMS Motorsport Van Diemen had its most competitive outing since the season opener in Adelaide.

Having started 12th, Reid was one of the only drivers in the field to lap quicker than her qualifying pace during the event as she moved inside the top ten. Reid held off a fast-finishing James Bergmuller to score ninth place – equaling her career best performance scored at the Clipsal 500 this year.

Reid again matched her qualifying times in the final race late Sunday to closely follow Sam Sewell to the line in 13th place after yet another competitive showing.

“We improved the car all weekend and in the end it felt really good,” said Reid.

“At Queensland I didn’t have any confidence in the car so I couldn’t push as hard as I would have liked. At Oran Park the car was so much better and I was able to have some great battles with a couple of people during the weekend.

“Race two was really good, it was certainly nice to be back in the points again,” She added.

“I had James Bergmuller closing quickly behind me but there was no way I was going to let him past – I wanted the points!

“The final race I had a great battle with Sam Sewell and although I couldn’t get any more points it was a good end to the weekend. It’s certainly gone a lot better for us this weekend and we are improving all the time.” Said Reid.

The continually improving performance from both car and driver has given the team added heart heading into the next championship round – to be held at Sandown in early September.

The 19-year-old Adelaidian has experience at the circuit, having twice previously competed there in the Victorian State Formula Ford series.

Driver Database is huge
December 2 2008
I started this site in 2004 with about 100 pages related to the Formula 1 drivers of the 2004 season. Now, more than four years later it has grown a bit. How big is it, you ask? Total number of pages: 210744 (at Dec 01) Size of text in database: 47.5 MB While 47.5 MB might not sound like much...
