Samantha Reid ready to put on a home-town show

The Royal Adelaide Show may well be over for another year, but one of Adelaide’s leading young drivers is ready to give her home fans an exciting performance at a different kind of show this weekend.

19-year-old Samantha ‘Samy’ Reid will suit up for this weekend’s sixth round of the Australian Formula Ford Championship at Mallala Raceway with the best possible chance of taking her #42 BMS Motorsport Van Diemen RF03 to a career best performance in the Open Wheel series.

Reid, this year competing in her first full National Championship campaign, has completed plenty of testing and development miles at the 2.8km circuit approximately 55km outside of Adelaide and says that this weekend is her best chance to race with the leaders of this year’s Formula Ford Pack.

“Because we are competing on a limited budget, Mallala is the only circuit that we have been able to comprehensively test at this season,” Reid said.

“That, and all the racing miles that I have had here in the past, should put us in a good position to have our most competitive weekend of the season so far.”

With confidence in the car and circuit a key to posting strong results, the ability to come out on a familiar circuit and push hard from the first session is something the Adelaide University student has lacked this season – until this weekend.

“Because this is very much a learning year for us, we have been spending the first session of each meeting we have gone to setting up the car and learning the circuit,” she explained.

“Mallala will hopefully be different because I will have confidence in the car and in the setup from the first session out, which means we can focus on developing and refining the car instead of starting from scratch.

“I like to set myself high goals, but I think it is very realistic for us to run in the top eight this weekend, if not higher,” She added.

In a further boost to her preparations, Reid has fully recovered from a serious bout of the flu that hampered her progress at the fifth round of the championship, held at the Sandown 500 two weeks ago.

Samantha has spent the time following the meeting recuperating at home, and her professed herself fighting fit for her home round this weekend.

“It wasn’t much fun at Sandown,” she said.

”I could barely talk and it certainly affected my performance at a round I was looking forward to being competitive at. I’ve been able to rest up in the last one and a half weeks and I’m feeling better now than I have for quite a while. I’m looking forward to being able to give it a real go this weekend.”

The sixth round of the Australian Formula Ford Championship will be contested over three races this Sunday, September 17th.

Driver Database is huge
December 2 2008
I started this site in 2004 with about 100 pages related to the Formula 1 drivers of the 2004 season. Now, more than four years later it has grown a bit. How big is it, you ask? Total number of pages: 210744 (at Dec 01) Size of text in database: 47.5 MB While 47.5 MB might not sound like much...
