One-two for Carlin at Silverstone
Carlin Motorsport took a one-two at Silverstone this morning, in round 17 of the 2008 British F3 International Series. Having lost the lead at the start to team mate Brendon Hartley, Oliver Turvey snatched victory on the penultimate lap with a move at Croft. Jaime Alguersuari finished fifth, while Sam Abay drove a strong race to cross the line in eighth.
It was an all Carlin front row as the teams lined up for the first race of the day, in dry and bright conditions. As the lights went out Oliver Turvey struggled off the line, allowing Brendon Hartley to catapult past him into the lead. As the cars headed down to turn one, Turvey found himself under attack from John Martin and Marcus Ericsson, but managed to hold onto his second place. Behind them, Jaime Alguersuari had held onto fifth place, having passed John Martin, but lost a place to championship rival Sergio Perez. Sam Abay also maintained position in tenth place.
In what unfolded to be a rather uneventful race, the positions remained unchanged, although Turvey continued to pile the pressure on race leader Hartley. From lap 10 onwards the gap was down to just 0.4 seconds, although Turvey struggled to find a way through. By lap 21, the gap was down to just 0.3 seconds and pushing hard for what would have been his fifth race win of the season, Hartley ran wide at Copse, allowing Turvey to take the lead. Taking the race victory and setting the fastest lap, Turvey takes away 21 points, meaning the top three drivers in the championship are now separated by just two points.
Reflecting on his third race win of the season, Turvey said, “Brendon got a great start and did a really good job throughout the race as I could see he was struggling quite a lot. I got really close a few times, but there wasn’t really the opportunity to make the move. Towards the end of the race Brendon made a small mistake at Copse and I was able to get side-by-side and then just squeezed through as we went into turn two. It’s great to win this race; I’m only two points off the lead, so hopefully in the second race we can make further progress.”
Second placed man Brendon Hartley said, “I made an ok start and had a good first couple of laps and pulled out about a second on Oliver. I found in qualifying yesterday that my pace dropped off a little at the end of the long runs and I think that might have been a factor today. Towards the end Oliver had a lot more pace than me and was piling on the pressure. I made a small error at turn one and he got through. Oliver drove a fantastic race but at the same time I’m pleased to finish second. I’m starting in a very strong position from pole in the next race and will be aiming for the win.”
Team Principal Trevor Carlin added, “Once again we’ve seen a great drive from Oliver and Brendon, both drivers raced very hard, but very fair. Sam is really driving well this weekend, he made up a couple of places and was quickest in the middle sector. There’s only two points separating the top three drivers in the championship now, and Brendon is most definitely still in contention, so every point counts.”

I started this site in 2004 with about 100 pages related to the Formula 1 drivers of the 2004 season. Now, more than four years later it has grown a bit. How big is it, you ask? Total number of pages: 210744 (at Dec 01) Size of text in database: 47.5 MB While 47.5 MB might not sound like much...
