Odds didn’t come good for Clark in Croft Formula Renault UK Winter Series
Kieren Clark, the 18 year old Royston based youngster, had a challenging day at the Croft rounds of the Formula Renault Winter Series, in his second drive for Loughborough’s Apotex Scorpio Motorsport team.
The Palmersport Bedford race instructor couldn’t get the car to perform in the damp conditions of the morning qualifying, and ended 19th in the 32 car grid for both of the Croft rounds.
A disappointed KC commented, “This is really frustrating, I’ve been much more on the pace in testing, but with the wet and cold circuit, I just couldn’t push the car any faster. With 2 red flags at the start of the session, I didn’t really get much time to get into the rhythm.”
The first race didn’t fare much better, and with the track still wet, everyone was on wet tyres again. At the start, 2 cars collided and KC had to dive between the debris, fortunately clearing the accident, but the race was immediately stopped.
As the damaged cars were cleared and the grid was reformed, it was a possibility that the track could dry as the race progressed, but still looked quite wet. Some teams opted to change to slicks on the grid, but with no time to swap the car from damp settings, this was a big gamble.
For the first 4 laps, KC managed to match the pace, but it was soon clear the slicks had been the right choice and KC struggled to keep the car on the track.
With the drying conditions, he slipped back through the field and after a couple of trips to the grass wisely concluded it was better to keep the car in one piece for the final race.
Race 2 was dry, and with the previous disappointment behind him, KC was fired to improve his track position from the 19th starting position, but couldn’t make up any positions at the start and was caught in the queue into the first bend. Some solid driving saw KC on the pace and in the right place to make good use of mistakes from cars ahead of him. After 5 laps he started to pressure Calin Motorsport’s Ghanem and a good run out of the hairpin had KC running side by side down the finish straight to get to the corner first, to make up another place. As the race entered the closing stages, McDonald had managed to make up places behind, and had closed the gap to a few tenths, but KC held on for 15th.
KC explained, “I had to work hard in the last 3 laps to keep ahead. I was determined not to loose out and kept my head down though the final corners to keep the place.”
“This winter series has been a tough learning period, the first race at Donington was great, but after that the last races haven’t reflected my potential for various reasons, so we’ve got to sit down and review how we can move forward for the UK series next year.”
“As well as this we’ve got to concentrate on finding suitable partners to work with us and the team for next season, I think we’ve got a lot we can offer the right sponsors.”

I started this site in 2004 with about 100 pages related to the Formula 1 drivers of the 2004 season. Now, more than four years later it has grown a bit. How big is it, you ask? Total number of pages: 210744 (at Dec 01) Size of text in database: 47.5 MB While 47.5 MB might not sound like much...
