More top fives for Johnston

Adelaide's Asher Johnston has continued to show impressive form in the Victorian State Formula Ford 1600cc championship following the fourth of six rounds, contested last weekend.

Held at Sandown Raceway, 19-year-old Glenelg-based Johnston finished inside the top five in each of the four races held at the tough circuit just one week after the Sandown 500, and consolidated his strong position in the championship in just his first year of Formula Ford competition.

After posting a vastly improved performance in the third round of the championship – a round, also at Sandown, that saw Johnston score his first Formula Ford pole position – similarly strong results were expected in the fourth round following a strong test day at Winton prior to the event.

Johnston delivered in qualifying, scoring third on a tightly contested grid just .131s from pole position. Impressively, the #18 Mygale lapped quicker than his pole time set in round three, showing the progress made between rounds in both setup and driver confidence.

In changeable conditions, Saturday’s opening race saw Johnston make a good start from the second row of the grid, the setup of the #18 car coming on as the race progressed en route to a 5th place finish.

With the race one finish the starting position for Sunday’s first event, Johnston made a good start and ran sixth in the opening stanza of the five lap affair. He then made strong progress in the last two laps of the race to finish 4th.

A ferociously close third race saw the top five cars covered by just one second as they finished, Johnston holding fourth the entire race, finishing less than three tenths off the podium.

The strong weekend was capped off by another top five finish in the fourth and final race, a 12-lap affair held late Sunday.

The quartet of top five results have consolidated Johnston’s position as one of the most consistent leading contenders in this year’s competitive Victorian State Formula Ford Championship, racing consistently with some better financed drivers from the likes of the CAMS Rising Star squad and other series leaders like Taz Douglas.

“What a full on weekend that was,” Johnston said at the conclusion of the final race.

“They play for keeps at the front, that’s for sure – You’ve got to earn every little piece of bitumen you race on otherwise you’ll be pushed off it!

“We had lots of little dramas on Friday (Practice) but ended up putting in a better time in Qualifying than I did to get pole for round 3. I was right with Taz (Douglas) and Cade (Southall) throughout the session which was promising.

“We were happy with qualifying and Sunday was really good, hard and tough racing and I really enjoyed it, even if it wasn’t the kind of results that we would have liked to score. It’s good to know that I can mix it with these guys on a consistent basis now and as long as we keep working hard I’m certain that we can find that first win I’m after.” He said.

The strong results at the weekend see Johnston climb one position in the championship, now provisionally 6th with two rounds remaining.

The fifth round of the Victorian State Formula Ford Championship will be held at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit on the 21st and 22nd of October.

Driver Database is huge
December 2 2008
I started this site in 2004 with about 100 pages related to the Formula 1 drivers of the 2004 season. Now, more than four years later it has grown a bit. How big is it, you ask? Total number of pages: 210744 (at Dec 01) Size of text in database: 47.5 MB While 47.5 MB might not sound like much...
