Martin leads the way at Silverstone
John Martin led the Räikkönen Robertson Racing F3 team today, in two competitive qualifying sessions at the Silverstone round of the 2008 British F3 International Series. The Australian qualified on the second row for round 17, and will start seventh for round 18. Team mate Atte Mustonen will start race one from sixth and race two from ninth, while Henry Arundel will start race one from 12th and race two from 15th.
Conditions remained dry and bright at the Silverstone circuit, as the teams took to the track for qualifying. Throughout both 30 minute qualifying sessions the times remained close, with just a few thousands of a second covering many of the drivers. Despite the level of competition, both Martin and Mustonene qualified in the top ten for both races.
Reflecting on qualifying, Martin said, “I was fairly happy with my performance in first qualifying, but I just need to find another tenth. It’s so competitive this weekend that even a few tenths can make a big difference and put you further down the field. We’re starting a bit further down for race two, but I still think we can make up some places and get a good result.”
F3 Rookie Henry Arundel was less happy with his qualifying session saying, “I was pushing really hard in the second qualifying session and was looking good for quick time, but I spun on the second to last corner. It’s frustrating but that’s what happens sometimes when you’re pushing hard. We need to focus on making up places in the races now.”
Team principal Anthony Hieatt added, “Qualifying was extremely close today. In both sessions the top eight were covered by just half a second, so a small mistake can make a big difference to the final qualifying position. John did a great job and should be aiming for a podium in the first race. Henry has been quick here, but unfortunately he didn’t quite tie together all his best sectors to produce the lap he is capable of. Atte seems to have struggled a little, but we’ve seen before how good he is making his way through the field, so I’m still confident he can get a good result.”

I started this site in 2004 with about 100 pages related to the Formula 1 drivers of the 2004 season. Now, more than four years later it has grown a bit. How big is it, you ask? Total number of pages: 210744 (at Dec 01) Size of text in database: 47.5 MB While 47.5 MB might not sound like much...
