Hartley does the double for Carlin

Brendon Hartley took Carlin Motorsport’s second pole position at Silverstone today, having set the fastest time ahead of round 17 of the 2008 British F3 championship. Race one pole sitter Oliver Turvey put in a last lap dash to take second on the grid, taking Carlin’s second front row lock out of the weekend. Sam Abay improved on his race one effort and will start sixth, with Jaime Alguersuari starting eighth.

Conditions remained dry and bright for the second qualifying session of the day, and once again the Carlin drivers were the last to take to the track. Sam Abay was the quickest Carlin driver in the early stages, until Turvey took provisional pole position, with just over half of the session gone.

In a repeat of the morning’s qualifying session, the times remained incredibly close, with Hartley taking provisional pole from Turvey by just 0.001 seconds. Sergio Perez closed the gap by going third fastest, just 0.001 seconds off Turvey, meaning the top three were covered by just 0.003 seconds.

The tension continued into the final minutes as the times continued to tumble, with Nick Tandy setting the quickest time. Hartley was on a charge however, to become the only driver to set a time under 1minute 15 seconds and take his fourth pole of the season. Lying in third place with just seconds remaining, Turvey upped the pace to take second place on the grid.

Reflecting on qualifying performance, Hartley said, “I’m really pleased to have taken pole. I was a bit frustrated after the first session as I felt I didn’t get the best lap together. Its good for my championship, I have the other championship contenders behind me, although I think its going to be quite a big battle between me and Oliver, with both of us on the front row for both races. I need to focus on finishing and winning both races, so there’s quite a lot of pressure, but I need to make up for mistakes made earlier in the season.”

Team Principal Trevor Carlin was pleased with the team’s performance, adding, “I think this qualifying session demonstrated just how competitive British F3 is this season. Brendon did a brilliant job; we saw the tables turned with Brendon putting together the big lap, although Oliver was very strong again. Sam was fifth for the majority of the session before falling to sixth in the final seconds, and did a great job to make steps forward since first qualifying. Having qualified eighth I think race two will be about damage limitation for Jaime, but overall we’re looking good for the races tomorrow.”

Driver Database is huge
December 2 2008
I started this site in 2004 with about 100 pages related to the Formula 1 drivers of the 2004 season. Now, more than four years later it has grown a bit. How big is it, you ask? Total number of pages: 210744 (at Dec 01) Size of text in database: 47.5 MB While 47.5 MB might not sound like much...
