First U.S. win for Gerbi

The French driver Julien Gerbi finished 2nd of the 2008 US Barber Mazda Series first round, before taking the win on the second round Sunday.

Last week-end, the track of VIR hosted the 2008 US Barber Mazda Series first and second rounds. More than 30 drivers took part to this race, including Julien Gerbi, 10th of the 2007 national edition.

Race 1 : Qualified 6th during Saturday morning session, Julien took a carefull start from his outside grid position. After the 1st lap, he was already in 4th position, just behind Court Vernon that he would pass entering the 3rd lap. When the safety car entered on track on lap 3, Gerbi is in 2nd position. At the restart, the leader Corey Lewis took a gap of advance, leaving Gerbi and Vernon tussling for P2. The two drivers switched positions three times a lap till the checkered flag, that Gerbi crossed 11 thousands of a second before Vernon. On the photo finish, only a couple of inches separated them.

Race 2 : Starting from 2nd on the grid - his Race 1 position - Gerbi got out of the first corner at the 4th place. From the 1st to the last race lap, five different drivers tussled for the win, changing the leader's name on each lap. Julien took the lead in lap 2, but went down to 5th after the safety car came out for Orlandi's wreck. When the white flag went on, Gerbi was 2nd. He managed to avoid the last lap car contacts and mistakes that happened in the front field, in order to bring his L.A. FUEL designed SBF2000 to the win, his first in the United States.

Julien Gerbi : "Starting from 6th yesterday, I was hoping being able to reach the front field, in order to fight for a podium. Because of financial reasons, I haven't been able to participate to Friday free practices, that all the other drivers took part to. This double podium finishes and this win are a real relief for me, as well as the award of all the work accomplished till now. I particularly want to thank all the people which supported me during last year's tough times, as well as those who are helping me today. They never doubted, and their support is essential to me. This first U.S. win is their, as well."

In the Victory Lane, the n°66 Red car had some kind of a devil appearance. It was the second time of the week-end that Gerbi brought it to the front field. A few minutes later, a French flag was floating on the top of the podium. Its owner, the race winner, had just taken the lead of the American championship.
