Craig Baird fastest at the Paperclip on day one
Carrera Cup Australia Championship leader Craig Baird (ACER/Leading Solutions) has shown he’s not going to rest on his laurels at Queensland Raceway this weekend by being the fastest driver after today’s two practice sessions.
Gold Coaster Baird may have a huge lead in the Championship, but based on this morning’s performance he will be out to ensure his gap at the top isn’t reduced.
The first practice this morning at QR, where the all-Porsche category is supporting the V8 Supercar Championship Series’ City of Ipswich 400, produced the fastest times and with qualifying tomorrow expected to be held in similar conditions, the times will be a good gauge of what each driver could produce.
Baird, who jumped straight out of his Porsche and into a Holden for the V8 Supercar co-driver session, produced the fastest time of the day, a 1:12.0175, but he was only just ahead of his nearest championship rival Dean Fiore (Complispace/Advance Energy) whose quickest time was 1:12.0478.
Perth’s Aaron Caratti (Parklands on Bertram) was the next quickest, in 1:12.3021, while Bryce Washington (ADRAD) was fourth and David Wall (Shannons Insurance) fifth.
James Koundouris (Supabarn Supermarkets) was the fastest of the Pilatus Challenge competitors, which is for non-professional drivers over the age of 30, and with him only 18 points behind Pilatus leader Peter Hill (Boost/Globe) he has begun his weekend in the best possible fashion.
Fiore meanwhile was happy with today and confident he can challenge for pole on Saturday morning.
“The track deteriorated quite a bit between the two sessions and we didn’t find the ideal car set-up but I’m still happy with where we ended up today,” he said.
Caratti, who has already scored three pole positions for the season, was also quietly confident.
“I was only one-tenth of a second off so it isn’t a lot of time to find,” he said.
“I wasn’t able to string a perfect lap together so if I can do that tomorrow I’m sure I’ll be on the front row.”
Washington said he wasn’t entirely comfortable in his Porsche in the second session and will look to a set-up more suited to the cold morning conditions.
“We will change the car back to something similar to what we ran this morning because it wasn’t quite right later in the day,” he said.
“We’re still trying to figure out where the car is best and what we need to tweak to get the most speed from.”
Wall, who won his first Carrera Cup race at the most recent round in Melbourne, said the track conditions played a bigger role than expected.
“One of the things about QR is that you’re never sure if you’re chasing the car or the track,” he said.
“With the times the question is, is the car better or the track slower? I’m sure we’re heading in the right direction though and I’m looking forward to seeing how we go tomorrow.”
Carrera Cup Australia continues its weekend assault on the “Paperclip” on Saturday, with qualifying and Race One, which Network Seven will broadcast at 3.30pm (check local guides).
Races Two and Three complete the weekend on Sunday.

December 2 2008
I started this site in 2004 with about 100 pages related to the Formula 1 drivers of the 2004 season. Now, more than four years later it has grown a bit. How big is it, you ask? Total number of pages: 210744 (at Dec 01) Size of text in database: 47.5 MB While 47.5 MB might not sound like much...
