Carlin make a strong start in Bucharest
Carlin’s British F3 rookies have made a strong start at the penultimate event of the 2008 British F3 International Series today, around the streets of the Romanian capital of Bucharest. In a repeat performance of the last event at Silverstone, it was Oliver Turvey and Brendon Hartley leading the way, with Hartley holding his place near the top of the timesheets through both practice sessions. Current championship leader Turvey set the quickest time of the day on his final lap in the second free practice session, on his first visit to a street circuit. Jaime Alguersuari was also on form, to finish fourth quickest while Sam Abay was tenth.
With only the second year F3 drivers having experience of the Bucharest street track, all four Carlin rookies had their first taste of the circuit in this morning’s free practice session. Red Bull driver Brendon Hartley was immediately on the pace, and was the quickest driver for the majority of the session. A quick lap by Atte Mustonen relegated Hartley to second place by just 0.029 seconds, with Alguersuari 0.071 seconds behind in third, Turvey fifth and Abay ninth.
Having made a strong start in the first practice session of the day, the Carlin squad were out to make further improvements in the second session. As conditions remained sunny and hot, and track conditions improved, Hartley was again the quickest driver from the outset. 15 minutes into the 30 minute session, all four Carlin International Class drivers were in the top five, as the team got to grips with the 1.9 mile long circuit. Sam Abay was running in the top four with half the session remaining, until a brush with wall forced him to return to the pits for repairs. Despite losing valuable track time, the Australian was able to finish the session in tenth.
With just minutes of the second session remaining, Hartley and Turvey became the only drivers to dip below 1min and 14seconds, showing their potential ahead of Saturday’s qualifying session. On his final lap, Turvey put in the quickest time of the day, a 1.31.861, to put Hartley second on the time sheets.
Reflecting on first visit to Bucharest, Turvey said, “It’s my first time on a street circuit so I’m really pleased to finish the day quickest. Its great fun, you get really close to the walls, and I think I managed to find the limit in the second session. We made a few improvements in between the first and second sessions, and we were quick on both sets of tyres. I think there’s a little more to come, we’ll look to see if we can make any improvements before qualifying tomorrow, but it’s a good start to the weekend.”
Team Principal Trevor Carlin said, “The team have made a great start. All four drivers have been quick again, which is very impressive considering the track is new to all of them. The team are working well together to find the best set-up and we’ll be aiming to make further improvements before qualifying.”
The team will return to the track for qualifying for round 19 tomorrow at 10.20 local time.

I started this site in 2004 with about 100 pages related to the Formula 1 drivers of the 2004 season. Now, more than four years later it has grown a bit. How big is it, you ask? Total number of pages: 210744 (at Dec 01) Size of text in database: 47.5 MB While 47.5 MB might not sound like much...
