Avila to drive a Ferrari in 2008

F3 racer Rodolfo Avila will join Mastercar China for the 2008 Asia Supercar Club (ASCC) series. The 21 year-old Macanese will drive an update Ferrari 360 Modena Challenge prepared in Italy.

Avila, who raced in British F3 and International Formula Master, has already completed an extra-race with the Italian squad, and his strong performance at Shanghai Extra Race was one of the reasons for the agreement. Consisting of 10 races, the 2008 ASCC will kick off at Sepang on 16 of May. Taking in circuits such as Okayama, Chengdu, Zhuhai and F1 tracks Sepang and Singapore, the championship offers drivers a unique combination of track styles in Asia with a strong TV and Media coverage of the continent.

“I have been saying that I’d like to return to Asia if I had conditions to win. Thanks to Macau Government, MacauSlot.com, BNU, RP Macau, Tsing Tao Beer, Fat Siu Lau Restaurant and Sujika Crafts finally I got the opportunity together with Mastercar. It is a challenge I am thoroughly looking forward to”, held Avila who felt the warm welcome of the championship organisation, and Mario Crugnola and Paolo Candusso’s team.

Confidence isn't something that Avila appears to lack, but the GT rookie's self-belief was surely given a further boost when he finished 2nd position at Shanghai Extra Race - as the top Mastercar drivers. The young Macanese is now determined to make the most of his outings in the Asia motor scene return:

“The team and I have the same goal, but more importantly we have the same outlook on how to reach it. I hope to be as fast as possible to keep up the same race pace of the quickest GT3 cars like the Gallardo. We don't underestimate the challenge but I aim to fight for the victories. The team is making an effort to win The last time I raced in Sepang was in 2003 so I don’t remember much but I can’t wait to get in and go”, said the former Asia Formula Renault 2.0 Champion.

The ASCC was established by the Supercar Club Hong Kong which has been the organiser of the GT race series since 2003. The ASCC is sanctioned by the FIA, and is the Asia’s top multiple make GT racing championship. Although this is the sixth year for the ASCC, it will be the first time the Challenge will be a part of the prestigious Asia Festival Of Speed weekends. All cars competing in the challenge are GT3 class vehicles, this includes Porsche 996 Cup/997 GT3, Ferrari 360/430 Challenge, Chevrolet Corvette Z06, Lotus Elise GT3 and Lamborghini Gallardo GT3.

The first ASCC event will be held on 15 – 18 May 2008 (4 days event) at Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia.
