Twelfth position after a difficult weekend for Vervisch
October 28th, 2007 - On the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, the ultimate round of the Formula Renault 3.5 took place this weekend. Frédéric Vervisch again defend the colours of the Italian team GD Racing.
After only two short practice sessions of each 45 minutes, the drivers had to tackle qualifying on Saturday morning. While everyone knew the Catalonian circuit from testing earlier this season, Frédéric had to become acquainted with the track. Nevertheless, he was very strong during qualifying. In his group, he continuously set very fast laptimes. In the end he was seventh fastest and qualified 14th on the grid. “I’m very pleased with the outcome. In the hairpin, I lost a lot of time because I had poor traction, but anyhow I’m much faster than my teammate and we proved to be able to be up front.”
A top 10 finish seemed to be possible in race 1, but a broken damper affected his race. “We got lots of understeer”, Frédéric explained. “The car was not as good as it was during qualifying, so we were not able to be in front.” Vervisch had to content himself with the 21st position.
But in race 2 everything went a lot better. After a fantastic start and an incredible first lap, Frédéric moved up from 21st to 12th place. “Wickens was behind me all the time, but I couldn’t get rid of him. While braking for the hairpin, my tyres were dirty and I lost traction coming out of the corner. Wickens overtook me. After that, it was his teammate Aleshin who was putting pressure on me, but I was able to fend him off.” The position that Frédéric lost to Wickens was regained after the winner of race 1, Miguel Molina, got a drive-through penalty. “I’m very happy with the result. This weekend, we have learned a lot in view of next year.”
“I would like to thank everyone at GD Racing. But also my sponsors who made it possible for me to finish runner-up in the German Formula 3 Championship. Without them, we would never had such a great season.”
