Crashed at the start of the Monza Grand Pirx after a big pileup. His Lotus caught fire but he was freed from the wreck by Hunt, Regazzoni and Depailler. Peterson was concious and had only suffered minor burns, but his legs had several bad fractures. During the following operation bone marrow from the fractures went into the blood stream and affected Peterson’s major organs. Peterson died in the morning of September 11 1978.
